How much does tree work cost on Teesside?

Most domestic tree jobs on Teesside land between £300 and £900. Check the tree before anyone starts a saw

Teesside has hundreds of trees under Tree Preservation Orders, and whole streets in conservation areas where even pruning needs six weeks' written notice to the council. Cut a protected tree without consent and the fines are unlimited, plus you can be ordered to replace the tree. Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar & Cleveland and Hartlepool councils each run their own TPO register and process, and the check costs nothing.

What good looks like

Every quote follows the same standard, and it is the same four things worth asking for whoever you choose:

• Insured: public liability cover of £5 million or more, shown on request. A branch through a neighbour's roof is exactly what it exists for.
• Qualified: chainsaw and climbing tickets (NPTC or LANTRA units) for the person doing the cutting, not just the person quoting.
• Written quotes: itemised, stating what happens to the arisings, whether the stump is included, and VAT. Never a cash figure on the doorstep.
• Licensed waste removal: a waste carrier licence number for taking the timber and chip away.

Teesside gardens, Teesside trees

The job mix follows the housing. The 1970s and 80s estates of Billingham and Thornaby are Leylandii country, towering conifer screens planted as saplings that now block light and start neighbour disputes under the high hedges law. The 1930s semis of Acklam, Linthorpe and Hartburn carry mature sycamore, lime and ash in back gardens with no side access, so everything gets climbed and lowered by rope. Ash dieback is now well established across the North East, and dead ash turns brittle fast, which changes how it can be climbed. Out at Seaton Carew and the Redcar seafront the easterlies off the North Sea do the damage, and storm callouts spike every autumn. The newer estates at Wynyard and Ingleby Barwick have younger trees but tight plots, where a badly sited ornamental needs formative pruning before it becomes next decade's problem.
